San Marino Unified School District is Accepting Applications

to Fill Two Vacant Seats on the Board of Education

Due to the resignation of board member Julie Chan Lin on May 26, 2021, the San Marino Unified School District currently has two vacancies on its Board of Education (BOE).  The BOE had opened a 17-day application period to fill the original vacancy created when Mr. Corey Barberie resigned his position on May 12, 2021.  The application period for Mr. Barberie’s vacated seat remains open until Friday, June 4, 2021 at 12:00 p.m.

The BOE is requesting a separate application process to fill the second vacated seat.  Both applications are available at www.smusd.us.  The application period for the second vacancy runs from May 28, 2021 at Noon through Friday, June 18, 2021 at noon. Mrs. Ryan, Mrs. Chon, Mr. Chang, and joined by the newly appointed BOE member, will screen applicants for the Chan Lin position on Monday, June 21 at 5:00 p.m.

The BOE will interview eligible candidates for Mr. Barberie’s seat in a Special Meeting of the BOE on Thursday, June 10 at 5:00 p.m. and will interview eligible candidates for Mrs. Chan Lin’s seat in the Regular Board Meeting on June 22, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.  It is the intention of the BOE to announce the second provisional appointee on June 22, 2021, and to swear that candidate into office to serve until the next regular election (November 1, 2022).

To be eligible to apply for appointment to the Board of Education, an individual must meet the following qualifications as set forth in Education Code 35107: 18 years of age or older, California resident, residing within the SMUSD boundaries, be a registered voter, not be disqualified from holding a civil office, and no criminal convictions per Government Code Sections 1770, 3000-3003.

This provisional appointee will hold office until December 9, 2022. An employee of the San Marino Unified School District may not be sworn into office as an elected or appointed member of the Board, unless he or she resigns as an employee. If the employee does not resign, the employment will automatically terminate upon being sworn into office.
